A one night Beppu trip built around Kannawa steam cooking

For a first visit, buy your ingredients at Jigokumushi Kobo Kannawa, try cooking with hot-spring steam, then stay overnight at an onsen inn. Shopping for food beforehand adds preparation and transport, and the workshop charges separately for bringing your own ingredients. Buying on-site is the simpler starting point. Food and stove hire are still separate charges. Official workshop prices

The reason to come is the making of a meal. Jigokumushi, often translated as “hell steaming,” uses hot-spring steam to cook food. In Kannawa, you can choose what goes into your meal and take part under staff guidance before sitting down to eat. It gives an overnight onsen trip a satisfying purpose. Visit Oita's introduction

What you wantWhere and howWhat to budget for
An easy first experienceBuy ingredients at Jigokumushi Kobo KannawaFood plus stove hire
Your own selection of ingredientsBring permitted, prepared food to the workshopStove hire plus a ¥600–800 bring-in fee, depending on quantity
Cooking and a day-use bath at one locationBuy ingredient tickets at Hyotan OnsenFood; bathing costs extra if you use the baths

The workshop accepts prepared outside ingredients, with restrictions: vegetables must be washed and fish cleaned, and items including cheese, mochi and bread are not accepted. Check its bring-in rules before shopping. Hyotan generally prohibits outside food and drinks inside the facility; baby food and allergy-specific food are exceptions. Hyotan dining information

Bringing food is most useful when you already know what you want to cook. For a short first visit, choosing from the on-site menu leaves more room in the day.

Understand the three separate costs

At the workshop, a small stove costs ¥400 for up to 15 minutes; a large one costs ¥600. Additional time is charged in 10-minute increments or part thereof: ¥200 for a small stove and ¥300 for a large one. Stove-hire prices

Food costs extra. One current example is the seafood set for one at ¥2,100. Ask staff which stove size and how many stoves your order needs. If bringing food, one small stove for the first 15 minutes plus the bring-in fee already totals ¥1,000–1,200, before buying any ingredients. October 2026 food menu, bring-in fee

Use this calculation: food + the required stove hire + any extra steaming time. Add the bring-in fee only if it applies. The ¥400 headline is not the price of a complete meal.

Give the meal room in a one night itinerary

This plan suits adults who want a hands-on food experience alongside an onsen stay. Warm food and a bath are an appealing winter combination, but the activity is available beyond winter. The sequence below is a planning suggestion, not a timed booking.

Getting here from Oita Airport

From Oita Airport, the airport's published bus guide lists about 47 minutes to Beppu Kitahama on the K route, or about 53 minutes to Beppu Station on the B route. The listed adult one-way fare is ¥1,600. These are different services, so check the destination before boarding. Airport buses do not require reservations and boarding is first come, first served. Oita Airport bus guide and timetables

For a straightforward connection, choose a Beppu Station service that fits your arrival, then take a local bus to Kannawa. The workshop lists approximately 20 minutes from Beppu Station's west exit to the Kannawa stop. Airport Kitahama services end this part of the journey in central Beppu, not at the workshop; plan a separate local connection. Workshop access

If your flight arrives late, put cooking on Day 2 rather than building the trip around reaching the last order. Allow travel and check-in time as well as any queue.

At the workshop go to reception first

Ordinary visits are walk-in: reception issues numbered tickets and can give an approximate wait. Choose and buy food tickets while waiting, and confirm when to return if you go out. Staff then guide you through the experience. A 15-minute stove-hire period is not the total length of the visit. Workshop FAQ, official visit sequence

The usual hours are 10:00–19:00, with last orders at 18:00. It closes on the third Wednesday of the month, or the following day when that Wednesday is a public holiday. Check the operator's current notices before traveling because steam conditions can affect operations.

A separate priority-entry package from Beppu Tabi Kobo offers another way to plan ahead. It requires a reservation request at least one week before the visit and advance bank transfer; cancellation charges apply after confirmation. This is a separate product from the ordinary walk-in queue, and it may be less convenient for an overseas visitor arranging a short trip.

Let staff lead the steam handling

Hands-on participation at the workshop is limited to junior-high-school age and older. Follow the staff's instructions for protective gloves, lids and moving food into or out of the stove. Ask about cooking times for your actual ingredients instead of relying on a generic timing chart. The steam is hot enough to cause burns. Workshop participation guidance, Visit Oita's safety advice

An alternative with a bath on site

Hyotan Onsen offers steam cooking using ingredient tickets and a staff explanation before the experience. Its steam kitchen opens at 11:00, stops taking orders at 21:00 and closes on Thursdays. Food-only visitors do not pay admission or bathing fees. Check the current ingredient-ticket prices there; the workshop's stove-hire tariff does not apply to Hyotan. Hyotan dining information

For a bath as well, its public-bath admission is ¥1,160 for ages 13 and above. Budget separately for food. Official bath prices

Autumn and winter 2026 notice: Hyotan plans full closures on November 12 and November 30–December 4. Its two dining venues, including steam cooking, will be closed November 30–December 11. During those dates, don't assume a combined cooking-and-bathing visit is possible. Official September 30 notice
