New Kindle Colorsoft or Kobo Libra Colour: How to Decide Whether to Upgrade

US readers | Rechecked October 11, 2026

If your books are on Kindle and you have specific comics or illustrated books you want to read in color, put the new Colorsoft on your shortlist. If built-in page-turn buttons matter more and your next books are available through Kobo, start with the Libra Colour. If you mostly read novels and black-and-white manga, keeping a working monochrome reader may be the most satisfying use of your money.

Check which Colorsoft you are buying

This comparison concerns the redesigned 2026 Colorsoft, not remaining stock of earlier versions. Amazon's announcement was published October 1, 2026. It describes rolling preorders across markets, including the US; the US Colorsoft product page also showed “Pre-order now” when rechecked October 11. Neither retrieved page established a US shipping date. Check the selected model's delivery estimate before ordering; Japan's November 11 plan is not a US release date. Kobo's US store lists the Libra Colour at $259.99 with an Add to Cart option. That confirms a retail listing, not delivery to your address on a particular day. Kobo Libra Colour

Let your books choose the store

Before comparing screens, pick three books you want to read next and find the exact editions in both stores. A black-and-white edition will not acquire color because you bought a color reader. Full-color comics, illustrations and diagrams give you a concrete reason to upgrade; seeing colorful covers alone may be a smaller benefit.

Your existing purchases matter, too. Amazon says DRM-protected books are limited to Kindle devices and apps. Eligible DRM-free purchases can now offer EPUB and PDF downloads when the publisher has enabled them. Kindle Unlimited loans do not qualify for those downloads. Check the actual books in Manage Your Content and Devices rather than assuming your whole library can move. Amazon's DRM policy

Kobo supports EPUB and PDF, including certain supported DRM systems, but format support does not make Kindle DRM compatible. If only part of your collection transfers, keeping your old Kindle alongside a Kobo may make more sense than repurchasing favorite books. Kobo's supported formats

US library borrowers have options on both platforms. Most Libby books can be sent to Kindle through Amazon; the Kindle feature is US-only. The Libra Colour supports borrowing through Kobo's built-in library service with a participating library and card, but library and Kobo catalogs do not match perfectly. Test your library's titles before making borrowing the deciding factor. Libby on Kindle, Kobo library borrowing

Compare the setup you will actually use

The Libra Colour has built-in page-turn buttons. For attached physical buttons on the new Colorsoft, budget for the Signature Edition and the separate Page-Turn Cover. A remote is a different setup: useful when the reader is propped up, rather than held in one hand.

Amazon amounts are the US announcement's October 1 prices, rechecked October 11; Kobo amounts are the US store prices checked October 11. All are in US dollars, before applicable sales tax and any shipping. Amazon's announcement prices are not a final checkout quote. Books, optional chargers and other accessories are excluded. The 32GB button-equipped setups differ by $139.99, although the Kindle total also includes a protective cover. Amazon prices and accessory compatibility, Kobo price and specifications

For remote reading, Colorsoft plus the $34.99 Kindle Click totals $324.98; Libra Colour plus the $29.99 Kobo Remote totals $289.98, before a stand if needed. Kindle Click also supports Kindle models from 2024 onward, so an accessory may solve your problem without replacing the reader. Kindle Click, Kobo Remote

Handwriting is another separate expense. Adding the $69.99 Kobo Stylus 2 brings the Libra Colour to $329.98. Skip the pen if you just want to read. Kobo Stylus 2

When keeping what you have wins

Do not upgrade just because the product photos look appealing. If the books you want are mostly text, your current reader works, or moving stores would split an important collection, wait. If color quality or small diagrams are central to your decision, wait for hands-on demonstrations of the new Colorsoft rather than treating manufacturer claims as a comparison test.

Choose Colorsoft for a Kindle-centered reading habit with a real use for color. Choose Libra Colour when its available books and built-in buttons fit your routine. Keep monochrome when neither choice fixes a problem worth the cost.

This is a specifications-and-purchase comparison, not a hands-on review. Before paying, confirm the model year, exact books, accessories, delivery estimate and return terms in the selected US store. A dated preorder announcement does not establish that shipments have begun.
