The Useful Question
English (US)

Why do smart lights turn off while you are sitting still?

Check the off rule and its delay first. If the room still goes dark while you read, consider sensing designed for smaller movements. A more expensive sensor alone will not necessarily end the ritual of waving at your lights. A hallway you walk through and a room you sit in need different definitions of “finished.”

Three choices before buying anything

Before automation, carrying groceries makes the switch awkward to reach. Afterward, entering can turn on the light and leaving can eventually turn it off. The new work is tuning missed occupancy and unwanted triggers. The useful question is whether that work is smaller than the inconvenience you wanted to remove.

Start with one supplementary lamp if practical. Keep another usable light while you learn what the system does. This is not a guide to replacing a wired wall switch.

Movement is evidence, not a head count

A common passive infrared, or PIR, motion sensor responds to changes in received infrared energy. People and animals emit infrared radiation; movement within the sensing pattern creates changes. It is not recognizing faces. PIR is also a low-power option, as Panasonic's explanation describes.

While you read quietly, the sensor may stop reporting movement. An automation can interpret that absence of reports as a reason to turn off after a delay. Some PIR designs detect smaller movements; coverage and placement still matter. “Motion sensor” is not a single specification.

Millimeter-wave radar, often shortened to mmWave, uses reflected radio signals to detect small movements. That makes it a candidate for keeping lights on while someone sits with only subtle body motion. Texas Instruments demonstrates fine-motion sensing in a particular experimental setup. That is not a performance guarantee for every retail sensor or seat in your home. “Still presence” does not mean infallible detection of an absolutely motionless target.

A hallway timeline shows entry detection, lighting, a departure delay, and switch-off. A reading-room timeline keeps the light on while small movements continue to indicate occupancy, then waits after departure before switching off.

Find out which timer is doing the waiting

There can be a delay before a sensor reports an empty room, then another delay in the lighting automation. Aqara's FP300 manual explicitly says these delays add together when both are configured.

A short delay can react to brief detection gaps. A long one leaves the lamp on after you leave. There is no universally correct number: choose around the room's actual use and adjust one setting at a time.

Check what happens when you return during the wait. Does new occupancy cancel the pending shutoff? That depends on the automation, not just the sensor technology. Also look for a separate bedtime schedule or another rule controlling the same lamp. Otherwise you may replace a sensor when the off command came from somewhere else.

Battery power is now a product choice

Do not assume mmWave always requires a power cable. The US FP300 listing describes a combined PIR/mmWave device powered by two CR2450 batteries. Battery placement can be convenient, but replacement and charge-state checks remain your responsibility. Manufacturer battery-life claims depend on settings and use.

Buy for your market and check the exact package. The manual linked by Aqara's US store lists FCC ID 2AKIT-PSS04; that is manufacturer documentation, not an independent certification audit of a unit in your cart. Aqara also has a regional activation policy. An overseas bargain is not automatically interchangeable with a US-supported model. No live checkout or inventory check was performed for this article.

Occupancy is not the same as a sofa zone

Ask what you actually need: anyone in the room, or someone in one particular chair? Whole-room occupancy may be sufficient for a reading lamp. Mapping many zones adds setup work that may have no benefit for that goal.

Matter support does not establish that every app receives every feature. Aqara's current FP400 page distinguishes direct third-party Matter setup, which exposes one whole-area occupancy sensor, from setup through Aqara Home, which can share supported zone occupancy sensors. Compatibility depends on the setup route and the relevant platform and firmware. This is an integration example, not a blanket purchase recommendation.

The FP300 feature matrix likewise distinguishes Thread and Zigbee capabilities. Confirm that your chosen app exposes the settings you need. Controller and network roles are covered separately in starting with one Matter room.

Try five ordinary situations before fixing it in place

Use safe temporary placement permitted by the manual. The following is a proposed acceptance check, not our test result.

Distinguish a missed person from a false occupied state. Marketing about interference rejection or pet recognition does not establish zero errors. Change position, coverage, or sensitivity individually; if automatic shutoff remains disruptive, remove that rule.

Keep a way for household members to turn on a light without a phone. Do not make a convenience sensor the sole lighting control where failure would create danger. Detecting breathing-sized motion is not medical monitoring or a guarantee of a child's or older person's safety. Success means getting back to your book without thinking about the system.
