Replace the iPhone Battery or Buy a New Phone

If extra charging is your only real complaint, get a battery-replacement estimate before shopping for another iPhone. The useful question is simple: would you still enjoy using this phone if its battery were in better shape?

If you would, a repair deserves consideration. If you are also struggling with storage, missing a camera feature you genuinely need, or losing access to an essential app, include those problems in the decision.

Checked October 10, 2026, Japan time. This guide draws on Apple's documentation. It is not a hands-on repair review or a diagnosis of your device. US and Japanese service conditions are identified separately below.

Check whether the battery explains the problem

Open Settings → Battery. On iPhone 15 and later, choose Battery Health; on iPhone 14 and earlier, choose Battery Health & Charging. Look at maximum capacity and any service recommendation. Apple's battery checks

Maximum capacity compares the charge the battery can hold with its capacity when new. It cannot tell you exactly how many useful years remain. Replacing an aged battery can help with battery-related performance problems, but it cannot promise to fix every slowdown. Battery health and performance

For a sudden change in battery life, also examine app activity in Settings → Battery. Weak reception and background work can contribute. After a software update, Apple recommends waiting a few days and checking again because update-related tasks may still be running. Apple's battery-drain guidance

Make a short note of what actually goes wrong: more charging during an otherwise familiar day, unexpected shutdowns, or one app using unusually much power. Bring that description to the service provider alongside the battery-health reading.

For storage, start with Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Apple includes available storage among its checks for a slow device. Apple's slowdown guidance Our guide to iPhone and iCloud storage can help you decide whether there is room to improve the situation before replacing the phone.

Check the current requirements of apps you rely on for work, payments, and communication, together with Apple's iOS compatibility list. A battery replacement does not add storage, camera hardware, or eligibility for a different OS. Avoid making the budget depend on a promised number of extra years.

Compare a written repair total with the phone you would buy

Use the estimate tool for your model and service location. In the US, Apple's out-of-warranty estimate may have tax and shipping added. The final fee follows inspection, and Apple Authorized Service Providers can set their own fees.

In Japan, Apple's out-of-warranty estimate includes tax; shipping is added when needed. Inspection and provider-specific pricing still matter. These are regional service estimates, so do not treat a US figure as a Japanese quote or compare them without accounting for their different tax treatment.

No model-specific current price was verified for this article. Ask the provider for a written estimate showing:

For older models, check Apple's service-availability guidance before planning around a repair.

Then compare that total with the full purchase cost of a suitable replacement. Think about what you get for the difference. If the repaired phone still meets your needs, the lower outlay may be compelling. If you would immediately want to replace it for another reason, that repair may be an expense you would rather put toward the next phone. There is no universal repair-to-purchase percentage that answers this for everyone.

Understand what the 80 percent condition means

Apple describes battery replacement at no additional charge under eligible AppleCare coverage when the battery holds less than 80 percent of its original capacity. Check your active plan, the device assessment, and the applicable terms. US AppleCare battery coverage

Normal battery wear is excluded from Apple's limited warranty. Coverage and consumer-law rights can affect an individual service decision. US service and warranty information

The AppleCare condition does not make every battery below 80 percent eligible for free service. It also does not set a universal point at which everyone should buy a new phone. Your symptoms are worth discussing even when a percentage alone does not settle the choice.

Verify your backup before handing it over

Your iPhone may be erased during service. Back it up, check that the iCloud features you use have finished syncing, and follow Apple's current preparation checklist for your software and service arrangement. Never share your Apple Account password or device passcode; enter it yourself if needed and remain present while the technician has access to your device.

If you use iCloud Backup, verify the last completed backup date and time. A battery-only repair is still a reason to protect your data first.

Start with an estimate when the battery is the main problem. Start comparing phones when important limitations would remain afterward. Once those limitations are clear, our iPhone buying guide can help you choose the features worth paying for.
